Racism in America

Although years ago slavery was abolished several aspects of society can still be related to slavery. Michelle Alexander illuminates the idea through the text  “The New Jim Crow” that slavery and the Jim Crow laws are still prevalent in many aspects of society. Instead it has be rearranged and renovated  in a specific way in which still includes aspects of slavery but not slavery which was prevalent during the 17th-18th century. Alexander emphasizes upon the point that many systems in the United States are various forms of slavery. Alexander highlights the idea that even after slavery ended years ago many blacks are still being discriminated against till this day as he states “The arguments and rationalizations that have been trotted out in support of racial exclusion and discrimination in its various forms have change and evolved but the outcome has remained largely the same…An extraordinary percentage of black men in the United States are legally barred from voting today”(1). This quote reveals that although many believed and assumed that the conditions of blacks would eventually change and would progress since slavery ended. However, instead much of the conditions that occurred during slavery still occurs today such as preventing blacks from voting which is an essential right to any citizen. In addition what really stood out me and was extremely fascinating and significant was that Alexander brings up the question that why does crime have a color? Infact he states that ” particularly white youth are more likely to engage in drug crime than people of color”(7). This quote reveals that although majority of the people in jail are people of color the chances of whites doing drugs are higher. Thus, portraying inequality regarding the Criminal Justice System. Ultimately,Alexander emphasizes how inequality, slavery  and racism occurs till this day in various forms.
